The collection includes: how-to newspaper and periodical articles; puppetry book and film bibliographies and reviews; creative drama and puppetry lesson plans and articles; ideas for puppet construction; puppet plays; brochures of puppet makers and toy theatres; puppet company performance programs; puppet patterns; and children's books and a phonograph record used to motivate puppet construction and plays. Of note are materials on the Paper Bag Players theatre for young audiences company.

Joanne Rapp, art educator, art gallery owner, philanthropist, and arts advocate moved to Arizona in 1962 with her husband James, an architecture professor at Arizona State University (ASU). She initially worked as a substitute art teacher for the Scottsdale School system.
